Mission and Who We Are:

RJI’s mission is to educate, equip and mobilize communities with the tools needed to be a force in the global movement to end human trafficking.

Richmond Justice Initiative (RJI) is a non-profit, Christian faith-based organization that works locally and nationally to eradicate human trafficking.  We are committed to protecting at-risk youth by educating them about human trafficking through our nationally award-winning Prevention Project™ program.  We further engage the communities we serve through speaking engagements, in-depth trainings and prayer. RJI is wholly supported through the voluntary generosity of individuals, churches, foundations, and businesses.

A  Brief Description of Our Programs

  • Prevention Project Curriculum
Through our nationally award-winning Prevention Project curriculum, RJI not only educates young people on the lures of trafficking but also helps young leaders become abolitionists in the battle against modern-day slavery.
  • In-Depth Training
We equip youth workers (counselors, teachers, social workers, etc.) with the tools to recognize human trafficking and safely and effectively intervene if they suspect it. Click here to request a training for your group.
  • Church and Community Mobilization
Engaging communities through a variety of private and public events, we teach about human trafficking, what to look out for, how to effectively report tips, and how to become involved in the movement to end human trafficking. • Consultation
RJI believes strongly in collaborative partnerships and can advise businesses and organizations on large-scale projects engaging with anti-trafficking practices. Email us for more information: info@rvaji.com.
  • Prayer
We not only see prayer as our recognition of our complete dependence on God, but as a way to strengthen the church’s understanding of God’s heart for justice. We value our partnerships with Christian faith communities, whom we invite into prayer with us, as we believe prayer is a foundational aspect in the fight against slavery. Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?‘” Luke 18:1, 7-8

Richmond Justice Initiative (RJI) was founded in 2009 as one of the first anti-human trafficking organizations in Virginia. RJI began as a grassroots group of all volunteers whose focus was advocacy, church and community mobilization, and education. For the first few years, RJI was the driving force of the Virginia Coalition Against Human Trafficking (VACAHT), advocating the passing of vital state legislation that has strengthened the ability of our Commonwealth to effectively prosecute those who enslave and treat others like commodities, as well as to secure rescue and safety for the oppressed.

In 2012, RJI shifted its focus to the prevention side of the issue, attempting to curtail the crime before it could devastate more individuals and communities. With close collaboration with survivors of human trafficking, educators, law enforcement, and fellow anti-trafficking partners and leading experts, the Prevention Project curriculum was created to reach youth during their most vulnerable years and to invest in them as leaders of their generation. Since its inception, this program has received national accolades as it grows to impact communities nationwide. Today, RJI works closely with churches, schools, non-profits, and other programs to provide safe and effective human trafficking prevention and intervention.

In 2019, RJI celebrated its 10 year anniversary since the organization’s founding, providing effective human trafficking solutions to the communities we serve locally and across the nation!
